In a statement that responded to the inclusion of Montgomery Maryland county in a list of sanctuary jurisdictions in the United States, the county executive, Marc Elrich, accused the Trump administration of seeking criminalizing immigrants and “creating fear.”
President Donald Trump issued an executive order calling for a list of jurisdictions from the shrine. DHS issued the list on Thursday, the department noted in a post to X.
“We do not violate federal law and we will not make changes based on political headlines. The Montgomery county has always cooperated with immigration and the application of customs (ICE) in cases with violent crimes, serious crimes and threats to public security. This has been and continues to be our policy,” Elrich said in his statement.

“This designation, like many other actions carried out by this administration, seeks to criminalize immigrants, not protect public security. We will not be complicit in efforts to stigmatize us or guide us in our immigrant communities,” said the Democrat. “These types of ads are designed to create fear. But we do not govern for fear of Montgomery County. We govern by law and our values.”
United States immigration and customs application (ICE) announced the arrest of a MS-13 member in a statement earlier this month, highlighting several instances of the Montgomery County detention Center who did not honor immigration detainees for the person over the years, including last month.
“The Rockville Montgomery County Circuit Court sentenced Amaya for an attempt to rob motor vehicles on April 4 and sentenced him to three years of confinement with two years, five months and 11 days suspended,” said the statement from the national Salvador Nelson Vladimir Amaya-Benitez. “On April 18, the Montgomery County detention Center refused to honor the ICE immigration detainee and released Amaya from custody.”

The director of the Montgomery County Correction and Rehabilitation Department, Ben Stevenson, acknowledged the “error”.
“This individual fulfilled the criteria we use to notify and coordinate with the ICE due to a previous sentence sentence and validated band membership in the DOCR records. We have not been able to do this notification. We assume all the responsibility for this error,” he said in a statement. “Montgomery County has constantly stated that we cooperate with ice in cases involving people convicted of violent crimes, members of the verified band, distributors and drug dealers and other convictions for crime. This policy is still underway.”

Elrich said during a media session that “we did a part of our part. We did not make a policy decision to let go of that person.”
The Trump administration has aimed to suppress illegal immigration and seek to eliminate many people from the country after a massive number of people flowed on the United States border during the administration of President Joe Biden.
